Very good editor for multiple reasons

It’s simple enough for clods like me to use for simple projects like editing footage from my GoPro Hero2. It has very good tutorials covering pretty much every aspect, including some frankly amazing special effects – I’m sure a lot of other products can do similar effects but creating them is especially easy. Rotating video when I’ve accidentally knocked my camera askew (while riding motorcycles off-road) is trivial. It doesn’t annoy you by having a dozen menu items that won’t work unless you fork out extra $ for the feature (a favorite trick in older versions of Pinnacle Studio (probably still in newer ones but I haven’t used them) Pinnacle Studio had one of the best user interfaces I’ve encountered but was soooo horribly buggy that I could never complete anything more than a super trivial project with it – and even then on simple projects it still died on me half the time) This is actually my second purchase of Movie Studio, I already have version 11 but I got a new computer and I like this package well enough I wanted to have it on both computers, so I bought another copy. Not many software packages out there that I like enough to do that.

Excellent program for a novice

This review is for brand new beginners. Disclaimer–I’ve never edited or captured video without this program, so I can’t compare it to others. I bought Vegas Movie Studio because a friend told me that it was easy to learn and doesn’t freeze up. I use the program to put together family video clips. At best, these might include a title text and a fade out at the end–I am a novice and proud of it! Occasionally, I’ll add a few photos and some music but that’s about it. I’ve used the older version “11” for a few years but recently upgraded to the newer version “13”. My goal with this review is to let other beginners know that even technically challenged people like myself can use this program. For first time beginners, the instructions in writing are difficult to absorb. There is a webinar online but it’s hard to find. Just go to sonycreativesoftware DOT com (I spelled this incorrectly on purpose because Amazon doesn’t like listing websites in user reviews). On the bottom right of that website page, there is an item you can select called “training and tutorials”. Once you select it, you will be brought to a new page where there is a tab called video.

I arrived at this rating by trying other solutions that just did not work. I started movie editing with Pinnacle and it was ok; then they were bought by AVID. AVID reworked it and produced a great product; but within six months figured out dealing with consumer editors was not something they wanted to do. They sold to Corel. I agreed with most people that going with Corel was not something I was willing to tolerate; I would not use Corel if it were free. Most reviewers said not to buy the Sony because it was too much learning curve. What I like about the Sony package is; although the learning curve may be a little more steep, the understanding curve is right on. It makes sense and it works. It works. It works. I also tried the Adobe Premiere package and was more disappointed with that than I have ever been with a software package; crash city, the one thing I could rely on when I booted the software is it was going to lock up. Sony Works. It does not try to make all the decisions for you, it does not try to assume it knows more about what you want than you; you make the decisions and give the commands then the software works for you; it works.

Movie Studio is great, the others…hmmm…

I simply can’t afford any of the higher-end editing programs, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or subscribe to the cloud. So for a long time, I used Premiere Elements as a cheap alternative. However, I thought I would give the Sony MS 13 Suite a try. The video editor – the main component of the suite – is FAR superior to Premiere Elements. It handles memory much better, it is far more intuitive, and overall much more professional (as far as inexpensive software goes) that Elements, which is more oriented toward simple home video creation. I have also tried the paid version of Lightworks. Sony Movie Studio has both beat, hands down. (Note that I have never used the previous versions of Sony’s product, so I’m approaching this evaluation solely based on version 13.) That being said, I want to make an observation about Sound Forge Audio Studio, included with this package. Recently, I did some video that required a humming refrigerator to be removed from the audio. Not difficult to do, but apparently to do that you need to download a plug-in, one that costs a substantial sum, like over $100, at least from what I read. Really?

your best instructions for using it will be from Utube videos

I spent a lot of time checking reviews for the most reliable program for editing and burning blu ray disc’s. Make sure you order the Platinum version at the very least, as it includes several additional programs. One of those is required to actually set up and burn a disc. The bare bones version of Movie Studio 13 does not include these. As for the program, it runs well on my system which is a high-end gaming system. Keep in mind that although there is a help feature, your best instructions for using it will be from Utube videos. My favorite is Sony Movie Studio 13 Basic Training Part 1 – , by Steve Grisetti. There are several others, some of which concentrate on particular problems, but if you stick with the steep learning curve it will do all you want it to do. Quite frankly I’m just a beginner, but after banging my head against the wall and re-reading or re-watching the videos, you can get it to do what you want.

Great Software with So-So Codec Support

Great collection of software. I daresay that older versions (maybe 9 or 10) offered more customization in terms of codec support, but the newer versions are still very solid as far as editing features go. You pretty much have to go with the newer versions with newer versions of Windows, too, so you’d might as well get 13 as long as it’s the newest version. My only real gripe with this package is that it doesn’t really feel like a proper package. You get a mess of installers in different directories, and you have to install and activate each one individually. I really wish Sony would combine everything into a single installer. Also, it’s not really clear how you activate certain parts, as you’re provided with product keys for items that you have no idea how to access. That said, the software is solid. One feature that really sets this package apart is the Show Me How button, which allows you to access tutorials that work within the product interface to show you how to use certain features. It makes learning the software much easier. As far as editing and whatnot goes, the software has a lot to offer when you consider that this is supposed to be consumer-grade software.
