Excellent program for a novice
This review is for brand new beginners. Disclaimer–I’ve never edited or captured video without this program, so I can’t compare it to others. I bought Vegas Movie Studio because a friend told me that it was easy to learn and doesn’t freeze up.
Very good editor for multiple reasons
It’s simple enough for clods like me to use for simple projects like editing footage from my GoPro Hero2.
What I have been looking for?
I arrived at this rating by trying other solutions that just did not work.
Movie Studio is great, the others…hmmm…
I simply can’t afford any of the higher-end editing programs, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or subscribe to the cloud. So for a long time, I used Premiere Elements as a cheap alternative. However, I thought I would give the Sony MS 13 Suite a try. The video editor – the main component of the suite – is FAR superior to Premiere Elements. It handles memory much better, it is far more intuitive, and overall much more professional (as far as inexpensive software goes) that Elements, which is more oriented toward simple home video creation. I have also tried the paid version of Lightworks. Sony Movie Studio has both beat, hands down. (Note that I have never used the previous versions of Sony’s product, so I’m approaching this evaluation solely based on version 13.)
Great Software with So-So Codec Support
Great collection of software. I daresay that older versions (maybe 9 or 10) offered more customization in terms of codec support, but the newer versions are still very solid as far as editing features go. You pretty much have to go with the newer versions with newer versions of Windows, too, so you’d might as well get 13 as long as it’s the newest version.
Powerful, stable, and a great value!
So far I’m really loving this program. I chose it over getting the next upgrade in PowerDirector, and I’m really happy I did. I think the Sony Movie Studio program is much more stable. It’s got a bit of a learning curve, but it isn’t too bad at all. If you are new to video editing software you are going to have a learning curve regardless of which software you chose. If you aren’t new to video editing software it shouldn’t take you any longer than it took me to figure out the basics fairly quickly.
Easy to use, long time to master.
I have tried most of the consumer editing software programs. The Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 is by far the best that I have used. I edited a 7 minute video within a day of receiving the program. What is great about Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 is that you can used it without a steep learning curve. At the same time, it is very complex (a slightly scaled down version of Sony Vegas Pro), allowing you to create professional quality videos. The program has around 100 video editing tools and effects, most of which are the same as Sony Vegas Pro. There are numerous others available on-line, some free. It will take you a long time to master all the facets this program. I have been using this program for over a month and I continue to learn new techniques. There are a large number of tutorials for Sony Movie Studio (Sony Vegas Pro tutorials will work for most functions as well) on YouTube for beginning and advanced editing. The only negative for this software is that there is limited support from Sony. But, with the proper hardware (fast processor, lots of ram and a good video card) you will experience few if any problems, except for an occasional crash.
Darn Good Program
First I would like to say that I am not a professional video editor but I have been editing for many years. I started out using the Ulead products over 10 years ago and switched to Sony Vegas once it was apparent that Ulead would not continue support for their products. This version of the Sony software is about as easy to use as you can get. I really like the interactive tutorials you can access while you are editing and you can turn on or off the advance GUI if you want a more simple looking interface. The guts of the software are the same as the Vegas Pro 13 when it comes to rendering quality. I have used Adobe products and although they are good I feel their software is a little harder to use at first and that can frustrate some people. I think Sony Movie Studio is an outstanding choice for the beginner or the pro. Also if you look at the individual cost of each program that is included in the 13 Suite you can understand why this is such a bargain. Be aware that some of the programs like the Boris affects will not run on a low end laptops because it requires a better GPU but this will probably not be an issue for most people. Also there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to watch that will cut your learning curve down to nothing. Have fun.
